John Taplin Day Centre
Upper Maze Hill, St. Leonards-on-Sea
Telephone: 01424 433762 is in the grounds attached to Healey House.
This is a day centre for blind and partially sighted people and operates from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The John Taplin Centre, named after one of our most devouted blind members is purpose built and designed for those who are blind or partially sighted.
Members do not have to be registered, the only criterion being that they suffer from some degree of visual impairment. There is a homely, relaxed atmosphere where they can meet and socialise.
Members are encouraged to improve their mobility and maintain their independence. Frequent outings are arranged also shopping trips and occasional visits to a show.
Handicraft and quizzes are popular. Other activities include daily keep fit without moving out of a chair, dominoes, cards and musical afternoons and talks by visiting speakers but no one is pressed to take part unless they wish, and may prefer to chat with friends.
The Centre welcomes visually impaired people with a variety of other disabilities, such as stroke victims and deaf people, and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
Bathing Facilities are available in special Parker baths and members attending the Centre can have their hair washed and set, or permed in our modern hairdressing salon. Chiropody is also available and is subsidised by the Association.
Morning coffee or tea, lunch (with special diets catered for) and afternoon tea are provided.
Members are collected by mini-bus at any time after 9am, and taken home at 3.30pm. Two of the mini-buses are equipped with a tail lift, to make it easier for members to get in and out of the vehicle even with a wheelchair.
Members attending the Day Centre pay a small fee each day to help towards the cost of transport, lunch and refreshments, and bathing if required.
Hairdressing and chiropody are charged separatley.
Members may attend as little or as often as they wish. All Social Activities are free and all members are encouraged to participate in events, although a quiet area is available for those not wanting to take part in these activities.
